Wooden Church at Creaca, Romania

Located in Creaca, the Church of Archangels Michael and Gabriel was built in the early 18th century. We have no records of the patron or the builders of the church; however, the most recent painting cycle was produced by a local artist from Romanasi, Ioan Pop, ca. 1900. The church has a standard plan with a rectangular pronaos/naos and a smaller altar chamber; the dimension of the ground plan is 10.6 x 5.8 meters. The roof stands at 6.8 meters, while the steeple has a height of nearly 17 meters. The church has a foundation of large stone blocks, which is significantly wider than the walls; therefore, a porch surrounds the walls with angular 'Y' shaped supports. The interior and exterior walls were decorated with paintings by Ioan Pop. Most traces of the external painting cycle, which consisted of figured medallions with a white background set into a sky-blue fill, have disappeared. The interior cycle is also poorly preserved; however, several figures of saints remain. The door into the pronaos is carved with rope and wheel motif; the stepped supports for the roof are angular.
