Constructed
in the 13th century, the Cetatea Chioarului fortress is in a remote area above
the Lapus River valley. The fortress was built sometime after an invasion of
the Mongols in 1241 and is attested in historical records of 1319 in relation
to a battle between Carol Robert and his rivals. Following its destruction, the
fortress was rebuilt in the second half of the 14th century and was used for a
century by the voivodes of Transylvania. Many repairs and modifications were
made through the early 18th century, when the fortress while finally abandoned.
Today,
little can be seen of the fortress; however, the landscape is spectacular and
visitors will happily discover ruins of the sprawling structure along the hill.
One watchtower was preserved in 2011-12 under a project by the Asociația
Centrul Ecologic Green Area with European funds for regional development.
